Guide to Car Accident Claims
Road Traffic Accident in the UK
In 2007 there were over 180,000 accidents on Britain's roads involving personal injury. 334,000 vehicles were involved and almost 250,000 people were injured. 30,000 of these injuries were serious, with 3,000 resulting in a fatality.
Clearly road traffic accidents are a major problem, and at My Injury Lawyer, we deal with many car accident victims each year, helping them successfully claim for compensation.
Around 75% of all vehicles involved in accidents are cars. This means that if you travel in a car, statistically speaking you're more likely to sustain an injury at some point in a car accident than not. If you have been injured in a car accident that wasn't your fault, it's important you record some important details as soon as possible to assist your compensation claim.
What to do after a car accident
After medical assistance has been sought, ensure you have the details of the other drivers involved in the accident. Ask for their name, address and phone number at the very least. Next, record the details of the cars involved - make, model, registration number, colour, and importantly, any damage caused to those vehicles. If possible, take a photo of the accident scene (use the camera on your mobile phone if that's all you have to hand). Also record the date and time of the accident. This information may be useful in pursuing your car accident claim later on.
Next on your list should be witnesses. Any bystanders who witnessed the accident should also have their details taken.
Further to the accident information, also keep a record of your injuries, your recovery, the dates you have visited the hospital or your doctor, and any other information about your injuries, such as any ways in which they've affected your life.
